The Winemaker
WEINGUT GLATZER
Starting out with one 5.4 hectares vineyard in 1987, Walter Glatzer and his wife Doris have grown the business and family cultivated vineyard area in Carnuntum, Austria, to 35 hectares today. Walter is happiest in the vineyard and believes pruning has a meditative quality to it. He’s part of a new generation that wanted to ‘do wine properly’ and move from mass market to premium Austrian wine, something he has achieved by relentlessly focusing on quality. Mathias has spent years learning the ethos and shadowing his father Walter, now increasing his input as the next generation of Glatzer winemaking. Hanna, Walter’s daughter, is also involved in the family business as well as branching out with her own range of wines.
FOCUSED ON WHAT COUNTS
We’ve never lost sight of what really counts: great taste and quality proven by our many award-winning wines.

Wine Region
Prized by the ancient Romans for its perfect wine production climate, Carnuntum is located in Eastern Austria, between Vienna and Bratislava. Whilst too warm for Pinot Noir, it is perfect for St Laurent! Glatzer cultivate around 3.8 out of only 23 hectares of St Laurent grown in Carnuntum.
Growing ST LAURENT
St Laurent’s early flowering means the biggest challenge it faces is Spring frosts, and a warmer climate like Carnuntum help offset some of this pressure. The soil is sandy and loamy topsoil at the mouth of the Danubian plain, which used to be a seabed. The vines are pruned by the Glatzer family with the aim to create optimal airflow, important for organic management as this better protects the vines. At harvest, the grapes are all picked by hand and only the best quality grapes are used to make the St Laurent wine.
Working with Canned wine CO.
We’re fans of the high-quality approach to canning, which is only right for a premium wine like the St Laurent.

Sustainability Initiatives
Organic Certification – Sustainable Austria – Biodiversity
Glatzer have both organic certification and Sustainable Austria certification. They support biodiversity in the vineyards and are conscious of wanting to minimise the number of times they visit the vineyards to spray. This has led to experimentation with resistant grape varieties such as Lauro, Donauriesling and Sauvignon Gris which only require three to four sprays per growing season. Investment in solar panels means that Glatzer now produces three times as much energy as they use in the winery! They also only use 2 litres of water per 1 litre of wine produced, which is commendably low.
