The Winemaker
TRE SECOLI
Tre Secoli means ‘Three Centuries’ and is a cooperative that was established in 1887 when two already important and established Piedmontese wine cooperatives, the Cantina di Mombaruzzo and the Cantina di Ricaldone, united to the cause of producing quality wines. The union generated the largest wine cooperative in Piedmont which has since dedicated itself to the implementation of quality systems and continuous research for improvement, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, obtaining numerous internationally recognised certifications in the process. Elio Pescarmona is the Director of the cooperative.
Wine Region
The vineyards of Tre Secoli are situated within the historical Monferrato hills, one of the most important wine districts in Italy, in Piedmont, North-West Italy. The two wineries sit 5 km across from each other, one lies at the bottom of the valley surrounded by Mombarruzzo vineyards recognised by World Unesco Heritage and the other resides on the side of the steep Ricaldone hill, governing the vineyard landscape.
Growing CHARDONNAY
The Chardonnay vines are grown on steep slopes of mostly sandy soils and clay. The vines are 10-20 years old and low yielding, producing concentrated flavours in the berries. The grapes are hand harvested due to the slopes and are the first harvest of the year whilst the acidity is still high and sugar content is low to yield the high acidity and low alcohol base wines necessary for sparkling wine production. The wine undergoes second fermentation in pressurised tank where it is rested on its lees, adding creaminess and complexity, before it is canned.

Sustainability Initiatives
Minimal Intervention – Equalitas Certified – Community Engagement
Tre Secoli has Equalitas certification which demonstrates their encouragement of sustainable development within the supply chain. They also have SQNPI certification, which is known as the ‘sustainable quality’ trademark. It complies with EU recognised Regional Integrated Crop Management Guidelines and encompasses agricultural practices somewhere between conventional and organic farming. Beyond the qualifications, Tre Secoli pursue a policy that promotes education of sustainability within their business and the local community, as well as investing locally for the continuous development of the region.
