The Winemaker
Tenuta Viglione
Tenuta Viglione was established in 1937 in the heart of Murgia in Puglia, the heel of Southern Italy. Current proprietor Giovanni Zullo took over from his father in 1985 when there were only 3 hectares of vines. Ambitious and tenacious, he has grown the estate to 250 hectares today. The estate centres upon a Masseria: a 16th century fortified farmhouse which comprises a complex of buildings surrounded and protected by walls. At the time, it would have housed the landowner’s family and farm workers. Some of the complex has been converted into hotel rooms for hospitality purposes and weddings are hosted here.
Senza fretta, come la Natura ci insegna
Time is our lead: its slow and unceasing flowing taught us to act at the right moment.
– Giovanni Zullo
Wine Region
The Murgia region is hot and dry, yet the grapes are grown on the higher altitude, rectangular-shaped plateau of the Altopiano delle Murge which gently descends from the Basilicata border in the West to the Adriatic Sea in the East.
WINE IN PUGLIA
The hot and dry climate of inland Puglia combined with the higher altitude positioning of the vines allows the grapes to receive perfect ripening whilst retaining refreshing acidity. Indigenous grapes like Fiano, Primitivo and Negroamaro thrive here, including more unusual varieties like the aromatic Aleatico. Two thirds of the wine produced by Tenuta Viglione is organic, including those which find their home in The Copper Crew. These fruit-forward wines reflect the beauty in simplicity that Italy and its cuisine is famed for.
JOINING THE CREW
Just as I started with a small wine business and an ambitious heart, I see the same in Canned Wine Co. and want to support its growth and expansion.
– Giovanni Zullo
Sustainability Initiatives
Biodiversity – Equalitas Certified – Water Mitigation
Tenuta Viglione is Equalitas certificatied, which demonstrates their encouragement of sustainable development within the supply chain. They have many initiatives such as encouraging inter-row cover cropping to attract pollinating insects such as bees, often favouring yellow and violet flowers. Solar panels are installed on the winery roof to harness the Puglian sunshine for cellar operations. An onsite water treatment plant recycles water for use in vine irrigation and the vineyards are installed with weather stations for targeted water management. Rainwater is also collected for protection against fires. Tenuta Viglione continually assesses their carbon and water footprint and innovates ways to reduce operational impact on the environment. Winery-organised transport between employee homes and the vineyards using company vans.
