The Winemaker
El Escocés Volante
El Escocés Volante is a family-owned business in Aragon, Spain, passionate about producing high quality wines with a particular focus on the native Garnacha variety. Owner and winemaker Norrel Robertson MW – also known as the Flying Scotsman – became a Master of Wine in 2000 and has lived in Spain with his family since 2003 after purchasing old vine vineyards in the rugged Calatayud countryside. A true family ordeal, Norrel’s wife Sharon and sons James and Will all play an active part in the business.
QUALITY BORN IN THE VINEYARD
We strongly believe that quality wine is born in the vineyard, and we endeavour to make authentic wines that are a quintessential expression of their terroir.

Wine Region
The vineyards are between 650 and 1000 metres above sea level in some largely remote sites. Located around the towns of Villarroya de la Sierra, Cervera de la Cañada and Torralba. Catalayud is in the North-East of Spain, close to Zaragoza.
Growing GARNACHA
As well as being at high altitudes, the majority of the vines are 50-155 years old and are planted on a variety of soils including slate, pudding stone, limestone and iron-rich clay, each contributing different characteristics to the wines. All the vineyards are dry farmed which means they receive no irrigation and there is little access to natural water sources. In combination, these factors produce low yields of grapes that are very concentrated in flavour whilst retaining freshness and balance. These delicate grapes are entirely hand harvested.
Working with Canned wine CO.
When we first sent our Old Vine Garnacha to be canned, I asked for samples to be sent back to us in Spain to taste. I gave the wine blind to a few wine trade members here in Spain and they said it was good if not better than the same wine bottled at source.

Sustainability Initiatives
Regenerative Viticulture – Water Mitigation – Community Engagement
El Escocés Volante is committed to sustainability. While organic viticulture is practiced and no pesticides are used, the winery is not yet certified, as Norrel and his team prioritise regenerative viticulture. They have invested in biochar, contributing to carbon sequestration, mitigating the effects of climate change and also increasing the soil’s water retention. Water use is mitigated, with no vineyard irrigation, and over winter cover-cropping helps to promote soil health. Beyond the vineyard and winery, El Escocés Volante forms an integral part of the local community, employing its vineyard staff from the local village of Aniñon.
